Just after 5PM, I strolled through Cambridge city centre on my way home, past punters asking everyone if they'd like a river ride, only £12, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, great views, etc.; past Senate House with its decoration of newly posted exam grades, each poster surrounded by desperate undergrads pushing to the front while trying to hold it together as they read the results of their three years of study (there was some crying, some screaming, lots of hugging); past three college porters hanging out in their academic gowns and boater hats; past a huge and echoingly empty library that the undergrads vacated after their last exams; past massive trucks of equipment going to set up May Ball stages and inflatable "bouncy castles".
Meanwhile my iPod song-shuffled to "There's No Day Like Today." It's from Rent and has some different connotations when sung by people with HIV, but it seemed to fit perfectly anyway. :)
Now I'm waiting for my fairy godmother to come and help me get ready for The Ball. Really! My first Cambridge May Ball starts in 19 minutes... ahhh!! My hair is all curlers and hair spray (I tried to make 1920s-style finger waves with help from youtube... yikes), my eyes looked like I got punched (I don't have a sharpener for my eyeliner pencil, so no precision!), and my dress is hanging in a corner hopefully dangling out all its wrinkles (oops). Any time now would be good, fairy godmother...
