TWO history of science puns in one day...

Yesterday my friend was awarded a huge amount of research funding to study the history of alchemy from 1300 to 1700. (Alchemy, the predecessor to modern chemistry, included the study of how to turn cheap metals like tin into gold.) Today we went to the pub to celebrate her recently finished 3-year-long PhD and recently awarded "job"/postdoc funding. She summed up her success of moving from PhD to well-funded postdoc: "Like my alchemists, I somehow turned three years' worth of useless material into gold."

One of my students wrote (inadvertently!) in her essay about the study of electricity in the 18th century: "Alessandro Volta's invention of the voltaic pile gave a spark to the growing interest in electricity."
