Gems from yesterday's round of undergrad supervisions:
"In Europe, the theories [about evolution] proposed by Lamarck and Merckel were more popular (in France and Germany respectively)."
-Note: Angela Merkel is the current Chancellor of Germany, not a 19th-century evolutionist! (I think this student meant "Haeckel", a 19th century German evolutionist...)
-Me: "Did you write this essay last night?", to a student who'd submitted his essay at 6am
Student, very slowly: "I may have done..."
"Well, Monday was Valentine's Day, so that was a total write-off."
-a student very seriously explaining why he'd turned his essay in late. ?! Who knew Valentine's Day was a reason to not do work?
